Income Tax Return Last Date: FY 2024-25

September 18, 2025 by CA Reema Negi

Every taxpayer should file income tax returns on time if he is required to file income tax return. Whether you are a salaried employee, pensioner, or a business owner, you should keep track of the income tax return last date and ensure that you avoid penalties, late fees, and unnecessary stress. In this article, we will cover the income tax return last date for different categories of taxpayers, the deadlines for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26), possible extended dates, and frequently asked questions.

Why Knowing the Income Tax Return Last Date is Important?

The income tax return last date is not just a compliance deadline; it plays a vital role in personal financial management. Filing before the due date helps you:

  • Avoid late filing penalties under Section 234F.
  • Get quicker processing and faster refunds.
  • Maintain financial credibility, which helps in loan approvals.
  • Carry forward losses for future set-offs.

Missing the income tax return last date can cost you not just in monetary terms but also create long-term compliance issues.

The Old Deadline

Under the Income tax Act, individuals, HUFs, associations of persons (AOP), and similar entities whose accounts do not require audit have had to file their income tax returns by July 31 of the assessment year.

Why the deadline was Extended (For AY 2025-26)

In 2025, the Central Board Of Direct Taxes (CBDT) formally deferred the due date from July 31, 2025 to September 16, 2025. This decision was announced on May 27, 2025. The reason include structural changes in the ITR forms, system updates, and delays in TDS Credit reflection. Here  is the circular link.

Official Notification and Recap

The CBDT notification (May 27, 2025) confirmed the extension. Media outlets and professional firms highlighted the structural reforms in ITR filling that justified this move.

Implication & what Happens Now

For non- audit taxpayers, the deadline is September 15, 2025. Filing after this will attract late fees under section 234F (5,000 if income exceeds 5lakh; 1000 otherwise). Interest under section 234A applies on unpaid tax. Belated returns can be filled until December 31, 202. Audit cases retain October 31, 2025, and transfer pricing cases November 30,2025.

Income Tax Return Last Date for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26)

Category of Taxpayer Original Deadline Extended Deadline Late Filing Deadline with penalty
Individuals / HUF / AOP / BOI (non-audit cases) 31 July 2025 16 September 2025 31 December 2025
Taxpayers requiring audit (e.g., businesses, firms) 31 October 2025 No extension announced —
Taxpayers with international/specified domestic transactions (transfer pricing, Sec 92E) 30 November 2025 — —
Filing Revised Return — — 31 December 2025

Income Tax Return Last Date for Companies, Firms, and Partnerships

  • Companies (Private/Public Limited) – Audit Cases:
The last date to file income tax return is 31st October 2025. Since almost all companies require audit, this deadline applies in most cases.
  • Partnership Firms and LLPs (Requiring Audit):
Audit is mandatory if turnover exceeds the prescribed limits under the Income Tax Act. For such cases, the due date is also 31st October 2025.
  • Partnership Firms and LLPs (Non tax -Audit Cases):
If no audit is required, then the last date is 16th September 2025, same as individuals.
  • Companies and Firms with International/Specified Domestic Transactions (Transfer Pricing):
Where Form 3CEB (Transfer Pricing Report) is applicable, the due date is 30th November 2025.

Thus, depending on your income source and compliance requirements, the income tax return last date will vary.

Income Tax Return Last Date for Pensioners

Many retired individuals and pensioners often overlook deadlines since their income is primarily from pension or interest. However, pension income is also taxable, and the last date for pensioners is 16 September 2025  for FY 2024-25.

Pensioners must check:

  • Total pension income.
  • Income from bank deposits, post office schemes, or senior citizen saving schemes.
  • TDS deductions from pension or fixed deposits.

Filing before the last date ensures they remain compliant and avoid penalties.

Penalty for Missing the Income Tax Return Last Date

Type of Penalty

Details
Late Filing Fee (Section 234F) – ₹5,000 if return is filed after the due date but before 31st December.
– ₹10,000 if filed later.
– Reduced to ₹1,000 if total income is below ₹5 lakh.
Interest on Tax Payable (Section 234A) 1% interest per month (or part thereof) on unpaid tax until the return is filed.
Loss of Benefits Inability to carry forward certain losses (such as capital losses) to future years.

Hence, adhering to the last date is financially wiser.

Income Tax Return Last Date and Belated Return

If you miss the income tax return last date, you can still file a belated return.

  • Belated Income Tax Return Last Date for FY 2024-25: 31st December 2025.
  • Such returns attract late filing fees and interest.

CBDT allows this provision so taxpayers don’t completely lose the chance to file, but timely filing before the ITR last date is always recommended.

Revised Return and Income Tax Return Last Date

Even if you filed before the ITR last date, you might later discover an error. The Income Tax Act allows you to file a revised return.

  • Revised Income Tax Return Last Date for FY 2024-25: 31st December 2025.
  • Revised returns can be filed multiple times within the deadline.

This ensures taxpayers can correct mistakes while staying within compliance timelines.

Important Things to Remember Before the ITR Last Date

To avoid last-minute stress before the ITR last date, keep these documents ready:

  • Form 16 from your employer.
  • Form 26AS and AIS/TIS (Annual Information Statement).
  • Bank statements and interest certificates.
  • Capital gains statements from shares, mutual funds, or property sales.
  • Proof of tax-saving investments (80C, 80D, etc.).
  • Home loan interest certificates.

Completing these preparations ensures a smooth filing process before the ITR last date.
